We're back with our weekly curation of community events and things to do. These safe spaces cater to the black community by providing places for shopping, enrichment, and

exploration. Additionally, since we are in the holiday and giving season we are also going to include volunteer and donation opportunities in each weekly events round-up.

12/2 - 12/11: Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Volunteers

Come out and volunteer with the Salvation Army for their Angel Tree program. Angel Tree is a holiday assistance program in which an individual sponsor or group sponsor purchases new clothing and toys for a deserving child (or "Angel") in need. For many kids, the gifts they receive through the Angel Tree Program will be the only ones they open on Christmas morning.

12/4: Dee’s Divine Natural’s 1st Pop Up & Shop Up

This pop-up shop is being hosted to help as many small business owners as possible! Want to gain experience, clientele, or general exposure? Become a vendor! Do you like supporting black businesses? Buy a ticket and show your support!

12/2 - 01/16: Compost Collection Volunteer

They are looking for volunteers to help staff the compost station outside of the Mt. Pleasant Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings. Volunteers will set up compost bins with bag liners; track the number of compost dropoffs that occur during your shift and report the total to the market manager and compost collector; monitor the items being dropped off to make sure only those which can be composted are added to the bins, and answer questions as needed from community members.

12/3: Holiday Gift and Ornament Making for Kids

Barns of Rose hill would invite you and your family to come in and make a holiday gift or ornament for your tree. They supply the tables, supplies, and volunteers to help set the kids up with materials they need to craft away. They will have three forty-five minute time slots of crafting starting at 12:00 and ending at 3:00. There is a 10 family limit for each time slot.

12/5: Black Holiday Expo - Black-owned Businesses Pop Up Shop

Come shop with Black-owned businesses at this pop-up location and see some of their deals from Black Friday. Shoppers and vendors are both welcome to register below for more details!

Price: Donations welcomed; $200 -250 for vendors

12/6/2020 - 01/3/2021: Volunteer at H. St. Farms

Volunteer every Sunday till January 3rd at H. St. Farms – the rooftop garden on top of W.S. Jenks Hardware. You would be volunteering at a unique rooftop growing area that utilizes DC's unused space. With three greenhouses and many plants, you can get involved and have a try at a green thumb!

12/6: The Black Market - A Celebration of Black-Owned Businesses

Join in this Sunday as they celebrate and support small black businesses in the DMV. This is a family-friendly event and tickets include a southern-style brunch prepared by a licensed caterer. This market is held at a private location with plenty of parking, this is an outdoor garden event. Temperature checks and masks are required to attend.


Shop local businesses and vendors from the area with a diversity of goods ranging from jewelry to clothing.


Price: $5 - General Admission, $65 - Vendor

12/6 - 12/24: Capital Area Food Bank

The Capital Area Food Bank is relying heavily on volunteers during this time to assist in the food packing taking place at their DC Warehouse. Go out and volunteer on any of their available dates below.

12/6: Virtual Yoga at the National Building Museum

Join them VIRTUALLY (via zoom) for a one-hour, all-level yoga class, ZOOMED to you live from the Great Hall of the National Building Museum! This event was originally planned to be live and in-person, but they’ve pivoted due to the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases. Your donation in any amount supports the NBM, as well as the organizer’s small yoga business. All are welcome-the class is open to brand new and seasoned yogis alike! No previous yoga experience required.

12/6: Hope For The Homeless - "SUndies" (socks and undies) Fundraiser

They are asking for your help to meet the needs of those without shelter for undergarments like socks and underwear. On December 5th, stop by the Oxon Hill Volunteer Fire Department from 10am-12:30pm for this community Shred Day event. Bring an unopened pack of socks and/or underwear for every box of papers to be shredded.

It is the season of giving and as you look into holiday events try to also give your time through these volunteer opportunities. Lastly Street Smart Collaborative is raising funds for their first Black-owned Gift Box. Our Black Gift Box hopes to advance the mission of supporting underserved communities by curating and selling a selection of goods from local black-owned businesses while serving as an advertisement for small businesses.
